Bentley Prince Street: Discover the Truth About EPDs

As the first USA manufacturer with a third-party verified Environmental Product Declaration for broadloom carpet, Bentley Prince Street used this year’s NeoCon event to launch The Truth About EPDs campaign. Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are a statement of product ingredients and environmental impacts that happen during the manufacture and life of a product, very similar to ingredient and nutritional labels on food packaging. With this campaign in action, the company is aiming to educate the design and manufacturing industries on the effectiveness of using EPDs as a tool to combat today’s greenwashing efforts.

EPDs are the most objective and transparent environmental labels in the marketplace to date. They are third-party certified and use standardized product category rules (PCRs) to evaluate a product across various categories. EPDs examine and publish information about a product’s ingredients, the energy and material resources used throughout its lifecycle and the overall lifecycle environmental impacts of the product. Because products in the same EPD category are evaluated using the same criteria, consumers can compare the environmental impacts of different products and make an informed decision based upon which product has better environmental attributes. Without EPDs, it is very easy for a company to greenwash using vague language and in-turn, mislead consumers. This is why more and more consumers are committing to use EPDs in their purchasing decisions.

Not only is Bentley Prince Street committed to making beautiful floorcoverings, the company is equally committed to making those floorcoverings responsibly and transparently. For this reason, the Bentley Prince Street EPD measures the lifecycle environmental impacts of one square meter of its 24 oz. solution-dyed products using High PerformancePC™ backing. Compared to other products in the same category, Bentley Prince Street’s 24 oz. solution dyed products have a lower environmental footprint in most categories including water use, energy use and climate change impacts.

To discover the truth and join Bentley Prince Street in its EPD campaign, the company encourages customers to ask manufacturers for the environmental facts – in the form of a properly reported, third-party verified EPD.
